Notion’s folder structure looks damn near infinite Bear, meanwhile, doesn’t allow any folder structure at all - everything is a note, and if you want organization, you’d better tag like crazy. Evernote allows for a folder structure only three levels deep. Many writing programs lock you into their folder structure if they even allow you to have one at all. That is to say, if you buy the personal subscription because you’re not a “team,” you’re not losing out on virtually any functionality. They also have additional pricing structures for use in teams and businesses, and unlike most services that do this, the feature lock down isn’t egregious. (You can also sign up here and get $10 worth of credit if you do decide to pay for it.) I found that 1000 blocks is more than enough to determine if this is an app that can work for you, and if you’ve got a tablet with a keyboard (the best setup if you really want to use this free forever), you’ll never need to pay a dime. Deleting blocks doesn’t free up the allotment of blocks you’ve already used, so once you use them all up (or go over the 5gb upload limit), you’ll have to pay $4/month to keep adding things. Notion is free up to the first 1000 blocks of use, unless you use it with the native app on an iPhone, iPad, or Android device, in which case it’s free indefinitely.Įvery piece of information you create - a page, a to-do list, a calendar - consumes a block. Where Notion Shines There’s a free version - and the paid one is still cheaper than Evernote But that’s not to say it’s not with some faults, either. The value of Notion is exactly in being more than just a writing program. You can bookmark webpages, embed audio, Google Docs and Sheets, create tables, spreadsheets, collapsible menus, and an entire host of other things with just a few simple clicks. If you want to write and format blog posts offline, complete with images, columns, and external links, you can do that, too. If you need a detailed wiki for research on your magic system, you can do that. If you want to create a novel, organized by scenes, chapters, arcs, or any other structure, you can move things around with nearly no limitations. The beauty of this app is that it can be used for whatever you need it for because of its extreme flexibility.
